What Outdoor Lighting Connections Must Handle

A lighting connector is part of a complete sealed system. Engineers should define whether the target ingress protection applies only while mated or also while disconnected. Cable outer diameter, gland compression, panel sealing, assembly torque and enclosure design all influence the result.

  • Rain, dust, condensation and washdown exposure
  • UV, temperature cycling and outdoor cable ageing
  • Operating voltage, current and inrush requirements
  • Secure locking under vibration and cable movement
  • Installation space, service access and mating frequency
  • Protection requirements when connectors are unmated

Power and Control Connections

Two- and three-pole connectors are common starting points for AC or DC power, while additional contacts may be required for dimming, sensing or control. Contact count alone is not enough: voltage, conductor size, temperature rise, clearance and local safety requirements must be reviewed for the actual equipment.

For compact threaded connections, compare the threaded M12 waterproof connector. For higher-current lighting or distribution equipment, the SL M25 2-pin 40A connector is a useful reference configuration.

Splitters, Branches and Daisy-Chain Harnesses

Street lights, greenhouse rows and architectural installations often use splitters or daisy-chain wiring to reduce field termination. A custom harness can combine one input with multiple outputs, defined branch lengths, labels and installation-ready terminations. Branch current, voltage drop and the loading of the complete circuit should be calculated before production.

Cable and Material Selection

PVC, PUR and TPE cable jackets offer different balances of cost, flexibility, abrasion resistance, temperature capability and chemical resistance. The choice should match the installation rather than a generic outdoor label. Specify conductor cross-section, cable outer diameter, flexing conditions, minimum bend radius and any flame-retardant or certification requirements.
